What do you take on for the ride?! essential stuff you should not forget at home

What do you take on for the ride?! essential stuff or waste of weight?!

Last year I helped writing an article about adventure bike packing and the things we should carry on a bike ride, depending on the type, place and length of the ride you are about to take.

The thing is that you have to be dynamic in everything you do, in how you ride, what decisions you make, and change your track if necessary and also in what you take with you on the ride. Yes, is good to have everything with you and don’t miss a thing when you camp but maybe you will not enjoy the trail that much with a 10kg backpack on you or with lots of stuff hanging from the bike. I for one don’t want to sacrifice the descent as much as possible, I like to enjoy every bit of it and ride it in almost normal conditions not being forced to take it to slowly because of the stuff I carry. That’s why I try not to take unnecessary things with me and I am very pleased when everything in my backpack (except first aid kit) is used and I did not carry anything useless with me :).

To help organize your backpack, you can use this website I find very simple and practical: lighterpack.com

With this in mind, I would split the bike luggage in 3 groups: super light, light and bike packing.

  1. “Super light” luggage – for half-day or maximum 1-day ride

These are fun rides, for training in the bike park or on enduro trails. These are rides on routes that you already know and where no significant surprises can occur. These are rides in which you can leave later in the day and which you can finish without worries over a beer in the evening. In such rides the luggage is super minimal and many of the objects, such as tools, it is recommended not to be taken in duplicates. For example, a pump is enough for everyone or a single multi tool. The recommendation is also valid for the other two types of luggage.

In a “Super light” ride it is enough to have the things below. Luggage should not exceed 1-1.5 kg.

  • Helmet
  • Snacks (2-3 energy bars / chocolate, a sandwich, possibly 1 energy gel)
  • Spare tire tube, self-adhesive patches, levers, pump, multi tool (except for the tube, the others are enough to be in one for the entire group, spread to other friends in the brat pack :)))
  • Water bottle – with water πŸ˜‰
  • Hip bag (optional), in which you carry tools and snacks
  • Knee pads (elbow pads are optional or depending on your experience)

You can check the representation of this type of luggage on lighterpack here.

2. “Light” luggage – for tours of 1 day or maximum 2.

The 1-2 days tours can be characterized as “short adventures”, in search of beautiful alpine trails. These are rides in which we do some exploration with an average level of “surprises”. It is not excluded to reach unknown areas from which we must get out safely. However, it is important to mention that having this luggage with you, rides should not exceed two days.

For safety we will have several items with us, such as a headlamp, first aid kit or change / sleeping clothes. If the ride involves sleeping in a shelter or a mountain refuge, we must also have a “light” sleeping bag. If we stay at a cottage, there is no need.

For such a ride, a backpack of 20-25 L is needed, and the weight should not exceed 3 kg (excluding the weight of the backpack). It is also important to say that the weight of the luggage is directly proportional to the accommodation comfort. The larger the luggage, the greater the comfort. I always sacrifice a little of the comfort side of the ride to have a lighter and more balanced luggage, to feel freer on the bike.

  • Helmet
  • Snacks – double the quantity from the “super light” luggage or keep the same number of energy bars if you can refuel on the route
  • The same tools (it is recommended to be fixed on the bike and not carried in the backpack)
  • Rain jacket
  • First aid kit
  • Sun lotion
  • Photo / video camera (or phone only)
  • Headlamp
  • 1 liter of water (possibly with hydration powder if you know it helps)
  • Backpack 20-25L
  • knee pads

You can check the representation of the light luggage on lighterpack here.

3. “Bike packing” luggage – for rides that take more than 2 days

This baggage can be more complicated and certainly heavier, but it should not be discouraging. It depends a lot on how you evaluate yourself – whether you feel colder or not, whether you eat a lot or not, etc. And that’s because you don’t want to take with you things you won’t use, excluding tools, or first aid kits. During the multi-day tours, surprises can appear on the route, from bad weather to dead ends on the route and you have to make a U-turn or get stuck there. These are reasons why luggage gets bigger, with more food, spare clothes and extra equipment. The luggage must contain food for two meals (evening and morning) as well as snacks during the day, if you know that the route does not go near “civilization”. If you go down to the cottage or a mountain hut in the evening, you can lose food because you will eat there. But if the route is only on top, on ridges, then the self-assessment we were talking about matters a lot. As for the food, in the evening you can be satisfied with “gas station” type sandwiches that withstand a day of heat or you can add comfort if you have small burner and some quick cooking food. But keep in mind that luggage can be shared between members of the ride. The burner can be stored in someone’s backpack, the gas container can be carried by someone else, and the dishes can be carried by the third riding buddy.

Also, if there is an epic trip and you are going to wild camp, you should have more specific equipment like bivouac bag (in addition to sleeping bag), air mattress or tarp under which 3 people can sleep. The survival foil is very effective, put under the mattress, and does not weigh much. In addition, it is very useful in case of an accident. For a warm sleep don’t forget that the surviving foil must be put with the silver part towards your body.

  • Helmet
  • Knee pads (optional)
  • Food for two days – it is preferable for the route to pass through areas with villages, cottages from where you can resupply. Otherwise the luggage is a bit bigger
  • Tea or coffee – for relaxation in the evening and in the morning when you look at the mountain tops πŸ˜‰
  • Tools (to be shared between members, taking care that the spare space remains in everyone’s backpack)
  • First aid kit
  • Sun lotion
  • Photo / video camera (or phone only)
  • External battery – for phone, video camera, GPS
  • GPS or cycling computer (preferably with navigation included)
  • Headlamp
  • Small burner (primus – 110-200g) and gas supply (capacity 100 g or more, 230 g if there are several riders in the lap)
  • Drinking cup for each rider
  • Spork (spoon, fork and knife integrated into a single object)
  • Lighter / flint (if you want a campfire or for the burner)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Wet wipes for intimate care
  • Sleeping bag, bivouac bag, mattress
  • Change clothes, for wet or cold weather – it’s up to you how you can stand the cold
  • 1-2 L of water – depends on whether you still find on the route for resupply (springs, cottages, villages)
  • Tent or tarp. The components of the tent (tent, tarp, sticks, nails) can be divided between ride members. There are also self-supporting tents. They no longer need the inner tent or nails because the upper tent is supporting itself using only the sticks.
  • Backpack 25-30 L.

CENTRAL BALKANS ENDURO BIKE TRIP THANKS TO OLD MOUNTAIN EPIC BULGARIA

This one is from far back, I think 2 years back. An awesome trip near Sopot and Botev peak, in central Balkans, all thanks to our friends from Old Mountain Epic. It was the most hard core ride I have taken so far, an all day out trip! Our neighbors’ country is beautiful and we have to explore it more. A beautiful ride with a beautiful crew. You can find out more content about this trip in this article we wrote in the past: Old Mountain Epic trip in Veliko Tarnovo and Sopot, or more about Veliko Tarnovo and Old Mountain Epic in the article about our Halloween ride πŸ™‚ VELIKO TARNOVO HALLOWEEN BIKERIDE PARTY

Throwback Saturday, Harghita Enduro

Throwback Saturday, Harghita Enduro. Hope this one will be revived in the future, the trails are just great. I know for sure my rims will miss PS3 πŸ˜…πŸ‘ŠπŸ». Enjoy!

CiucaΘ™ Enduro 2019, awesome friendly contest

Last year in August, CiucaΘ™ Enduro was revived in a new, not so competitive but pretty awesome form.

It was a friendly enduro contest, something more like a gathering, in which riders treated the so called contest as they wished. Some of them really battled but most of the riders present were only there to ride the trails with their friends and to somehow have a taste of how an enduro contest is held.

It’s a good thing because people get to see how an enduro mtb contest is like but have way more fun. Not everybody is prepared for racing enduro and this way you get a casual intro into riding enduro.

Besides this, you get some cleaned trails, music, food, great beer and lots of fun with your mates or get to know new people from the community.

Hope the contest will be held next year too, because we really enjoyed it and had a great time riding and having fun.

Thanks to all volunteers and organizers for making it possible. Cheers mates! πŸš΅β€β™‚πŸ‘ŠπŸ»

Cindrel electric bikepacking trip, thanks to NevAcademy

Ok, so the season had to end with some quality bikepacking trip and all had gone down thanks to NevAcademy and their great bikes.

We wanted to go back to Cindrel mountains because last time we came here we had 48h of rain which made us cut short the track we wanted to do. This time, thanks to Adrian and his electric bikes, we managed to do the track in a record time and we had some great fun going uphill, not only downhill.

Let me tell you, it’s something else with the electric bike, a totally different kind of ride, you have loads of fun going uphill, you cover a lot more ground, and you workout quite the same. As I see it so far, if you live next to a mountain, don’t hesitate to buy an electric bike, it’s exactly what you need. The electric bike will not replace your old trusty non-electric bike but it will complete β€œthe ride”, trust me.

As we live in Bucharest, and have to go 2h minimum by car to reach any mountain, the electric bike is not yet an option but we shall talk in a few years…

Ok, so our trip was already planned from last year, we knew the track we wanted to do and where we wanted to sleep.

We wanted to reach Cindrel peak, then Frumoasa peak, descent on the rocky road down to the road that takes you to Gura RΓ’ului and then go up to Cindrel mountain refuge. Only that, on the way up we stumbled upon a nice hut belonging to the forester in the area, and it had a room opened. It looked too good to be true and we decided to spend the night there. It was so warm and cozy that we didn’t even inflate our mattresses… It was the best sleep I had in a while ☺

Next day we did some inventory on our equipment (watch the movie below), and then up on the bikes and up the mountain, back to the ridge of Cindrel mountains. We passed Cindrel refuge and then did some electric push bike until we reached the ridge. From there we descended to Canaia refuge on the other side of the ridge and then back to PΔƒltiniΘ™ on an awesome trail that goes from BΔƒtrΓ’na Cole. Man it was fun, so fun that we were howling like wolves on the descend πŸ€πŸ€™.

This weekend made me reconsider the possibility of owning an electric bike in the future and opened up some new ideas of rides in the future, some hybrid ones, just you wait 😜.

Thanks Adrian and NevAcademy for the ride, we had a great time and can’t wait to ride together again.

Until then, we leave you with the material below to take your own conclusions. Ride safe!

MEHEDINȚI RELOADED

Yep, another superb one in MehedinΘ›i county 😜, this time 3 new trails and some fun riding on the old ones.

We can’t get enough of this place, it has something different to it, something like a… wonderland πŸ˜€ and our buddies here are just cool to ride and hang out with, so no wonder we always come back here with great pleasure. And I have a feeling that it is not the last stop here for this year πŸ˜…πŸ€™.

So, this time we did Domogled descent with Feregari descent, and afterwards we went to Tasnei valley and did some hardcore riding, and when I say hardcore, I really mean it. That trail made you look very hard for the word flow in it … But it worked out ok πŸ’ͺ🀭.

After this totally hardcore Saturday, we did the MehedinΘ›i Enduro trails on Sunday, but with a surprising one, the old but new Priest trail which is pretty awesome let me say :D, just check out the video bellow.

Here you can find the videos and some pics from that great weekend. Aaaa, and don’t let me forget, Thanks Jan and Alex for the great pictures and for the great riding, it was a pleasure riding with you and follow you on the trail πŸ‘ŠπŸ».

You can find the links to the trails here: Domogled Trail; Feregari Trail; Priest Trail.

Until next time, ride safe! πŸš΅β€β™‚

Harghita Enduro CNE 2019

5th national cup race, second time at Harghita Enduro, and it was uberfine!

All things lined up for a perfect weekend, the crew, the accommodation, the weather, the weekend (with world cup dh finals in line) just perfect. We had lots of fun hanging out together, catching up with the boys from other areas of the country and just riding perfect trails.

At these events it’s not all about the racing. Maybe for the top places it is but for middle riders it’s more about hanging together and about the atmosphere that creates around the event.

Last year it rained like crazy and this year it was dry like desert. Totally different conditions and the trails are too. In dry conditions I think you really get to see the harder part of Harghita trails. When trying to ride them fast, they really bite you πŸ˜‰

There are 3 different trails here, one harder than the other, the last PS being the dh course with a hard-steep part at the top and a flow line at the bottom.

All specials decents around 300m elevation and have almost 2km in length. The transfer is on a fire road that is used for reaching all PS starts. For exact map of the contest trails, check out trailforks here ;).

There are a lot of options for accommodation in the area all with great stuff, clean spaces and good food. This year we stayed at Vitus Pension with more of a mountain hut feel, and all we can say is that the food was just GREAT! Sugo pension, where the race office was, is a great option to ;).

Madaras peak is near, around 30min hike, and is a great peak to reach because of the view and the unique appearance.

For a different story, also check out the article from last year here.

Special thanks to Ride more crew and Bike Attack Resita for organizing the event and the cup!

Until Metal Enduro, ride safe and have fun! See you there πŸ˜‰

Semenic Enduro first edition #CNE 2019

Year of firsts ;), Semenic Enduro. I think all riders that didn’t know the area, were very surprised of Semenic trails, we for sure were. Man, the dirt, the rocks, the lines… just sick!

This one is not to be missed next year, you must trust us on this. Or better, check out the clip above and the pics bellow and we are sure it will be enough 🀣🀟.

The trails are technical, with rocks and different lines, loam and dirt. All of these make it quite difficult and challenging to ride at a higher speed. Don’t get us wrong, they have a lot of flow, but you have to pay attention and work a bit to get back from the trails safe ;).

One second of distraction and you will pay for it :)). The stages are demanding and long and you will feel it, for sure on ps2. When you think you finished it, bam! the hard part begins :D.

The top of the mountain has some different feel to it, the view, the abandoned mountain hotels make it that way. We enjoy riding here a lot, and being so close to Resita, makes this place a destination to visit even beside the contest ;).

Thanks again Bike Attack Resita for putting another spot on the map, you can look upΒ the contest trails here, on trailforks!

Until next time, ride safe!

Transilvania bike trails casual ride

This is how a casual ride on Transilvania bike trails (TBT) near Viscri and Crit looks like.

This year we visit 2 times this trails because they are just superb. Mellow trails with ups and downs in a beautiful forest near some old historical villages where you can find great accommodation and food. You could not ask for more believe me.

We strongly recommend you to stay at Agrotouristic Guesthouse Elena, in Crit village. Man, the food is fantastic and the hosts too. Friendly people with nothing to care but their guests. We eat so much and so good that we had to roll out of the beds to reach our bikes :))) Seriously!

And what goes well after a good meal? We tell you, a good single track thru the forest that ends up in anΒ orchard of pears and nuts! Perfect combination! After this we stopped at the local pub (birt) to have a beer with the locals. Always an animated experience.

No more words just pictures now. Hope we given you a good idea on how to spend an weekend there. The tracks you could do are these:Β  Track 1Β , Track 2.Β Enjoy and ride safe!Β πŸš΅β€β™‚πŸ»πŸ‘Š

Iezer Mountains awesome over 1000m descent

This video is from a few months back when we did an awesome descent in Iezer-Papusa mountains, probably the coolest there is there. There are lots of trails but this one is the best here and its very long, over 10km and over 1000m of descent :D. Ciucas amazing landscapes and awesome enduro singletracks

Ciucas mountainsΒ have some amazing landscapes and awesome enduro single tracks if you haven’t heard about it yet. It’s also on our must do list of each year, and I think this year we will come again here when an event will be held to replace Ciucas Endro contest that was canceled because of the lack of implication of some parties…:(. But for sure we will come to the event because that means good people, nice bikes, beers and trails so you have it all in one place with this beautiful landscape on the background :D.

Ciucas mountains, as we also said in the previous post about Bucegi, they are also very friendly with ski touring and hiking and trail running activities. We did lots of trips here and cross this mountains in every direction but for sure there are more trails just waiting to be discovered here.

Until we come back with a different story abut Ciucas, we live you the pictures and videos bellow to better understand the beauty of these mountains!

Postavaru mountain bike Trails, Brasov, Romania

This is a quick post about Postavaru trails near Brasov City, Romania :D.

BraΘ™ov is located in the central part of the country, about 166 kilometres (103 miles) north ofΒ BucharestΒ and 380 kilometres (236 miles) from theΒ Black Sea. It is surrounded by theΒ Southern CarpathiansΒ and is part of theΒ TransylvaniaΒ region.

The city is notable for being an important centre ofΒ Transylvanian SaxonsΒ in the past, and a large commercial hub on the trade roads between East and West. (Source: Wikipedia).

Also for us, Brasov is important because of its potential in mountain bike and ski activities.

Near Brasov is Postavaru massive, an almost 1800m height mountain with some awesome trails just waiting to bi ridden.

Also, Brasov is a beautiful chill city, with an nice old city full of activity and beautiful people.

In order to ride there you have to get yourself and you’re bike up to Poiana Brasov, which is a bit higher positioned then Brasov. To get there you have to bike there (around 45min-1h by bike) or take a shuttle bus from the city center. For this check out NH Bike guys witch offer professional shuttle services there, taking riders every each hour from Brasov to Poiana Brasov.

From poiana Brasov are like 4 trails that get down to Brasov, but also from there you can take a cabin up to the peak of Postavaru mountain and from there you have a beautiful over 1200m descent to town witch we really recomand. Also you can take a break at Postavaru mountain Hut and enjoy the view and the bear there :D… oh, and the cookies :))).

Without further ado, we leave you some tracks with 2 of the trails there, and also a movie to better comprehend the fun you will face on Postavaru Trils :))).

Trail tracks: descent from Postavaru peak, descent from Poiana Brasov on yellow triangle mark trail.Β Enjoy and ride safe!

Iezer-Papusa Enduro Singletrack

As imparti-o in 3 segmente.

Noi am avut getaway driver :D, thanks Ion!

Enjoy and ride safe!

3 awsome enduro singletracks in Bucegi Mountains

Muntele asta are atatea de oferit.

I like it more here ;).

Oricum, si asta merita facuta odata pe an :D.

Enjoy!

But most of times I like to ride you…

You Beast!

“Sometimes I like to look at you, sometimes just to hold you, but most of times I like to ride you…”

Frumos traseu, mai ales daca cobori cel putin in prima parte pe traseul amenajat Old school :D.

OUPS! Oana :P. Sa fiti fericiti!

Pana data viitoare, goodbye, it’s been a fun ride!
